A Dragonfly, a Samurai, and a Moment of Synchronicity

Sometimes life offers us a moment of perfect synchronicity — a quiet reminder that everything is connected.
I live in an urban environment, and over the years, I've created a small bonsai garden on my rooftop. Most of these trees were once dying plants that people left on the street as garbage. I brought them back to life and cultivated them slowly, patiently, over many years. This is one of the ways I practice resilience, presence, and patience — the same qualities reflected in the Samurai philosophy behind my latest handcrafted jewelry.
The Way of the Warrior
In chaotic times, I often find strength in ancient philosophy — lately, in the words of Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary 17th-century rōnin and master swordsman whose teachings continue to inspire samurai jewelry designs around the world.
Musashi (c. 1584–1645) is considered one of the greatest warriors in Japanese history. He won more than 60 life-or-death duels, developed the two-sword style Niten Ichi-ryū, and dedicated his later years to understanding strategy, discipline, and the human spirit.
At the age of 60, near the end of his life, he wrote The Book of Five Rings, a timeless text that divides life and strategy into five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and the Void. Each element represents a different dimension of human behavior, clarity, and mastery — themes that deeply influence my Musashi-inspired jewelry pieces.
But among his writings, the one that resonates with me most is a much shorter text:
The Dokkōdō — The Way of Walking Alone
Written just a week before his death, the Dokkōdō contains 21 principles for living with purpose, discipline, and inner freedom.
Its core themes include:
• Self-reliance
• Simplicity
• Acceptance of impermanence
• Integrity and clarity
Where The Book of Five Rings focuses on martial strategy, the Dokkōdō is intimate and personal — Musashi's final reflections on how to live. One line in particular continues to echo in my mind:
"Seek nothing outside of yourself."
All strength, wisdom, and transformation begin within — through awareness, perseverance, and authenticity. This message lies at the heart of my new Samurai jewelry collection.
The Tombo — Spirit of the Samurai
This philosophy became the inspiration for my latest creation:
a ring and pendant engraved with Musashi's words, combined with the Tombo — the dragonfly, the Samurai's ancient symbol of courage and victory. These pieces form the Tombo Samurai Ring and Tombo Samurai Pendant, both crafted with intention and meaning.
The dragonfly, known as Kachi-mushi ("Victory Insect"), represented:

• Fearless forward movement
Samurai believed it flies only forward, never backward — a powerful metaphor for unwavering resolve. Its swift, precise motion symbolized mastery and clarity of purpose, qualities embodied in this Dragonfly Samurai jewelry.

One evening, after sharing the wisdom of the Dokkōdō with a friend who was seeking direction, I looked up and saw a dragonfly resting quietly on one of my bonsai trees.
In that moment, everything aligned:
Patience, presence, and purpose.
