Description:
Epsilon of Delphi (or Delphic Epsilon)
The Delphic Epsilon is an ancient Greek symbol (key) associated with the initiation of man into the Light. For this reason it was located in the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, where the worship of the Sun was performed (Apollo was the God of the Sun). Specifically, it was placed three times (wood, copper, gold) at the top of the pediment of the central east gate of the church, together with "ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΕΑΥΤΟΝ (know thyself)" in the lower left corner and "ΜΗΔΕΝ ΑΓΑΝ (Nothing in excess, meaning you should find the Golden Mean in everything you do)" in the lower right of the same pediment. The origin of the symbol, and the phrases, was attributed to the Seven Sages of Greece or Seven Wise Men, which was the title given by classical Greek tradition to seven philosophers, statesmen, and law-givers of the 6th century BC who were renowned for their wisdom.
In Ancient Greece, the Delphic Epsilon symbolized:
1) as a shape => union and trinity, three parallel lines joined.
2) as a number => the 5 cosmogenic elements of Earth, Air, Water, Fire and Ether, quintessence.
Being one of the lesser known mystical symbols, not only in Greece but the entire world as well, the only information about Delphic Epsilon comes from Plutarch, who was a lifelong priest of Apollo. In one of his books, Plutarch gives various explanations in the dialogues, with the best being given by Ammonius (his teacher), as an address of surprise and respect to God, which translates as: only you exist, the only sure thing that exists eternally, in contrast to the "know thyself" which is a reminder to the mortal being, with its changeable nature, which is subject to birth and decay. My ring design is an exact recreation of the Epsilon and its appearance in the Temple of Apollo, with the Greek sayings of "ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΕΑΥΤΟΝ" and "ΜΗΔΕΝ ΑΓΑΝ" being on each side of the ring, and the Epsilon on top. Preferably, following the exact implementation of the Temple, it should also be created with 3 layers with the first one being wood, then copper and gold. The ring's purpose is to bring man closer to Light, just like the initiations in Apollo's Temple. Light, for Ancient Greeks, was a metaphor for Consciousness, and it represents Wisdom since it is through Light that things become apparent.
